Hard To Find Books

Shopping for hard to find books has always been a passion of mine. I love everything about books. I love the smell, the texture, and of course the words they contain. As much as I like new books, hard to find books are even better. When you buy a rare or hard to find book, you feel like you have found a real treasure.

I used to go to a store with my Mom that sold used and hard to find art books. It was called Bookbeat, and was located a couple miles away from our house. They had a pretty lousy selection of poetry, and even their fiction selection was only okay, but they specialized in out of print art books and rare magazines. Sometimes, I would just go there to look through the hard to find books section. They were pretty tolerant even though I was looking through some antique books and wasn’t very old. They kept an eye on me of course, but in general they let me comb through what I wanted to comb through.

Looking through those hard to find books, I actually discovered some artists that I wouldn’t have been into otherwise. I was especially intrigued with some of the graphic designers they had there. I wasn’t really aware that you could take letterforms and make them into art before I saw it done in an art book. I was only 12 at the time, so you can understand how I hadn’t been exposed to a lot.

Of course nowadays, I get a lot of my hard to find books on the Internet. Sometimes I feel guilty about not supporting my local bookstore more, but in general I’m pretty happy to buy books online. It used to take me months and months to find a particular book, but now I can go to Amazon or some other online book store and find it within minutes or, at the most, hours. Most hard to find books aren’t even hard to find anymore. That is how much the net has really changed things for us book lovers. It is definitely something to feel grateful for. It is nice to see knowledge becoming so much more widespread and easy to attain. From the most obscure novel to the most mainstream paper, everything is available through the web nowadays. I think am going to go to Amazon right now. It’s about time for me to dig out a new novel to read!
