Star Trek Collectibles

My older brothers were big Star Trek fans. They were collecting sci fi collectibles before it was really all that acceptable to do. Most of the kids I knew had a few Star Trek collectibles when they were young, but my brothers took it to another level. They had their own star trek phazors, figurines, and costumes. One of them had a model of the Starship Enterprise, and the other had a Klingon Bird of Prey. They would always stage mock battles with these ships, incorporating whole story lines from the original series.

Growing up in this environment, it was pretty easy to get sucked up in all the excitement. I wanted to be like my brothers, but they would not always let me play with their Star Trek action figures. That is why I got some Star Trek collectibles of my own as I was growing up. I started out with the basic characters from the original series, and then expanded my collection.

When I started getting into The Next Generation, my brothers were not happy with me. They were Star Trek purists to the bone. It took them a long time to even accept the next generation, and a longer time to grow to like it. Yet, slowly but surely, it started to win them over. Soon we were playing Star Trek games that transcended any particular series. We would overlap characters from one show and another, having them cross time and space in imaginary epic adventures. It sure made for some great games of imagination.

I remember the very first Star Trek convention I went to like it was yesterday. I was about 13, and I was a little bit nervous about it. I had a lot of friends who did not know that I was such a big Trekkie, and I did not feel quite right dressing up in full costume. Nonetheless, both of my brothers were dressing up, and I did not want to be the only one who was not. I wore a standard uniform, not trying to portray any character in particular. It was good enough for me to fit in.

Despite my hesitation, I ended up having a blast while I was there. It was neat to be around so many people who were as into Star Trek collectibles and the show as I was. I actually made a few friendships that have lasted a long time. I have been going to conventions ever since.
