Star Wars Conventions

Going to your first Star Wars convention can be a little strange. After all, it is not every day that you are in a whole room full of adults who are all dressed up in costumes from a particular series. Nonetheless, no matter how strange it seems, it is also a lot of fun. I have had more fun at the Star Wars conventions I have gone to than practically anywhere else. The costumes, the exhibits, the stars, and of course the Star Wars collectibles all make for an exciting time that is almost literally out of this world.

The key to enjoying Star Wars conventions is to just roll with it. A lot of people feel self-conscious about getting in to it at first. It seems a little bit strange to try to get into character, particularly when there are likely to be at least fifty people around you dressed as the same character. Still, you should try to feel comfortable doing it. You will have a much better time if you let the whole fantasy role-play aspect of it overwhelm you and dive right in to it.

After all, the whole point of the thing is to immerse yourself in the Star Wars universe. It is no mere coincidence that the series has had the staying power that it has. Even before they made the most recent three movies, there were people who had read the books, memorized the dialog, and worshiped the original trilogy from the very beginning. Star Wars gives people a simpler world without the moral complexities that we have to live with. It presents a universe of right and wrong where an evil empire is being challenged by a morally pure and righteous rebellion. You do not have to worry about complex shades of meanings. It is all right there for you.

Going to Star Wars conventions allows you to be around people who can really understand and appreciate this. It is such a good escape, particularly when done in the company of other like-minded fans. You can be anyone you want to be, whether good or evil, incidental or central. People will accept you for who you are and for who you are pretending to be. In a sort of geeky, odd way, it is a slice of paradise. And even if it is not your scene, it still may be worth checking out just to see the strangeness of it all.
